Responding to an unexpected crisis with no plan in place is one of the worst places to be. Having a prepared crisis communications plan is critical to reacting to any type of issue quickly, cohesively and strategically to avoid lasting damage to your brand and reputation.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Take initiative to do the proper research and align the interests of your organization with the interests of specific journalists. This will improve the chance that your story is not only picked up, but told in a compelling way that is aligned with your goals and objectives.

DON’T EXPECT JOURNALISTS TO SHARE YOUR AGENDA

Understanding how to tell your story in a way that is most compelling to reporters will ensure your story is a) kept as intact as possible, and b) in line with your organization’s goals and objectives. Feeding stories to the media that aren’t aligned with their needs is almost certain to cause a version of your story to be released that is spun differently than you might have hoped.

GIVE JOURNALISTS NOTICE

Think about the journalist’s timetable when it comes to your message. Will they need to go out and interview multiple people for the story? Will they need to do additional research? What type of publication are you hoping to see placement in - newspaper, magazine, television, etc? Giving a journalist ample time to properly present your story can have a great advantage for your brand and organization.
